Garmi

Not everyone will find “Garmi” appealing, particularly those who favor conventional entertainment to real-life drama and politics. Contrary to the typical fictional campus rebels, the protagonist is a complex and enigmatic individual, which adds an intriguing layer to the character.

With his new show for SonyLIV, “Garmi,” Tigmanshu Dhulia makes a return to the classroom setting. The series focuses on the deterioration of campus culture, the political parties’ infiltration of student unions, and the ongoing conflict between idealism and cynicism. It builds on the themes explored in his critically acclaimed directorial debut, “Haasil” (2013).

The protagonist of the tale is a young, aspirational man who relocates to a bigger city with the intention of pursuing a career in government. He is however caught up in a convoluted web of criminal activity, power struggles, and collegiate politics. The show investigates whether he will eventually work for the government or if life has other plans for him.

Written by Dhulia and Kamal Pandey, “Garmi” touches on a number of important themes. It examines the importance of caste in state politics, the waning influence of Leftist ideology, ruthless power deals, widespread corruption, senseless killings, the exploitation of underprivileged groups like Dalits, and the excesses of the police force. Mrityunjay Singh, a despicable police officer, seems to have a singular focus on the university and its surroundings.

The large ensemble cast is expertly directed by Dhulia, who makes sure that every actor, no matter how minor, has a memorable moment. The two main actors, Anurag Thakur as Govind and Puneet Singh as Bindu, give strong performances. Jatin Goswami portrays a disturbingly eager character who wants to probe the limits of depravity with impressive skill. Vyom Yadav gives the series a strong presence with his tall frame and stern demeanor, which are reminiscent of another well-known angry young man from Allahabad.

The episode “Garmi” ends on an ambiguous note that alludes to a future season that will feature Arvind and his enemies in a bloody battle (bheeshan sangram). There is no doubt that a new season is approaching. Yes, it’s worth the wait. As he learns the trade secrets, it will be interesting to see where the conflicted IAS aspirant ends up.

If its on OTT, Raven is always ready to binge on it and give his personal feedback regarding how good or bad is the show. Luckily we have saved lots of hours and trauma due to his strong and harsh feedback feedback.
