15 Years Of Tarak Mehta Ka Oolta Chashma

May 27, 2023

By 2008, a number of long-running successful shows in India—including “Kyuki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi,” “Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki,” “Kausati Zindagi Ki,” and others—had completely lost their appeal because they were primarily “saas bahu” melodramas. The protagonists of these shows never died, even after a time jump of 100 years or even after multiple accidents, which led to unrealistic plots. Every Indian festival or wedding ceremony would have a month-long episode. Some channels, like Colors, did try something different with shows like “Balika Vadhu,” “Uttaran,” etc. that focused on social and gender issues, but those too ultimately became “saas bahu” sagas.

But on July 28th, 2008, a new feel-good sitcom, titled “Tarak mehta ka oolta chashma” debuted on the less well-liked Sab TV channel. Asit Modi’s production company’s TMKOC, which was based on a well-known book by the late, great Tarak Mehta, immediately caught the attention of Indian viewers who had grown tired of watching saas bahu dramas. The program’s content was distinctive in that it highlighted positive aspects of Indian tradition and culture while also demonstrating family values and respect for elders without being overly didactic.

After dinner, it became a tradition for every Indian family by 2010, breaking all previous records and achieving the highest TRP ever. Makers added various spinoffs to the story over the years to keep audiences interested, such as “Gulabo Story,” “Jethalal in Pakistan,” “Popatlals marriage to bulbul,” etc. The show would reach the highest TRP ratings as soon as a new concept was broadcast.

Its humor and subject matter, as well as the cast members’ natural acting, especially Dilip Joshi, who gives Jethalal his heart and soul in the role.

On 15th Anniversary of the show Dilip Joshi talked about his journey in the show.

“Before I signed TMKOC, for over a year, I had no job; the serial I was working on had gone off-air. The play I was part of its runtime was over. So, I had no work. It was a tough time, and I couldn’t comprehend what I should do or whether I should change my field.
But by the grace of God, the serial was offered to me, and it became such a hit that there was no looking back,” says actor #DilipJoshi.

Today, the sitcom in which he is the lead actor completed 15 years continuing to be one of the most-watched shows.
